Conference of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, OSCE-ODIHR, Council of Europe, Central Council of German Sinti and Roma

The high-level conference “Confronting Anti-Gypsyism – The Role of Political Leaders in Countering Discrimination, Racism, Hate Crimes and Violence Against Roma and Sinti Communities” is hosted by the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office in co-operation with the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the Council of Europe (CoE) and the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma on Tuesday, 6 September 2016, in Berlin, Germany.

The OSCE and other international organizations and European institutions are dismayed by the persistence of anti-Roma rhetoric, hate speech and hate crimes. The negative public discourse against Roma and Sinti and racist violence remain major obstacles to Roma and Sinti inclusion and the elimination of systemic discrimination. Lack of genuine political will to promote equal opportunities for Roma and Sinti is often coupled with the attempt to gain support from the electorate by exploiting deeply rooted anti-Roma and Sinti sentiments. This opens up an opportunity for political leaders to use their public exposure and personal networks to build alliances and reinforce the message to confront Anti-Gypsyism.

In line with the OSCE commitments relating to Roma and Sinti the OSCE CiO in co-operation with ODIHR, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and other partner organizations will host an event to strengthen coalition-building among parliamentarians and political leaders to confront Anti-Gpsyism in public discourse and to counter discrimination, racism, hate crimes and violence against Roma and Sinti communities.
