It took a long time for the Holocaust of 500,000 murdered Sinti and Roma in Nazi-ruled Europe to be given a place in German culture of remembrance and in the German Evangelical Church (ECG). The first nationwide memorial services for this took place in 2020 and 2022 in the Berlin Cathedral. We want to continue this tradition and hold a remembrance service on Sunday, 29 January 2023, at 6:00 pm. Prelate Anne Gidion, Plenipotentiary of the Council of the ECG to the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union, will deliver the sermon. She represents the chairwoman of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (ECG), Praeses Annette Kurschus, honorary doctor.

After the service, Prelate Anne Gidion will hand over the ECG Council’s declaration on combating antiziganism to Romani Rose, Chairman of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma. With this declaration, the ECG, the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma and the Network “Sinti, Roma and Churches” will for the first time officially consolidate their cooperation to counteract antiziganism in the everyday life of church and society. The aim is to come to terms with the long history of exclusion and persecution, and to strengthen the participation of Sinti and Roma in politics and society.

Following the handing over of the declaration, there will be a formal reception in the chapel of the Berlin Cathedral. The “Tcha Limberger Trio” from Belgium will provide musical accompaniment for the evening.

Everyone is very welcome to attend. Please register for the reception on 26 January 2023 at Staffa@eaberlin.de at the latest.
